5G services will roll out in a month, 6G stack development in progress: Minister

Minister of State for Telecom Devusinh Chauhan on Monday said 5G services will be rolled out in about a month and the 6G Technology Innovations Group is working towards the development of indigenous 6G stack. India is likely to deploy indigenously developed and manufactured 5G telecom gears by end-2022, he said. "We've developed fully indigenous 5G test bed," he added.

 


No proposal to establish any new IIT in the country: Government

The Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar has informed that there is no "proposal to establish any new IIT in the country". "Accordingly, new IITs at Tirupati and Palakkad started their academic session in 2015 and IITs at Bhilai, Jammu, Goa and Dharwad started in 2016," Sarkar informed while replying to a written question in Lok Sabha.


Nation observes 80th anniversary of Quit India movement 


The 80th anniversary of the August Kranti Din or Quit India Movement, which is considered as one of the important milestones in the history of the freedom struggle of our country, is being observed on 8 August 2022.  The slogans “Quit India" and “Do or Die" became battle cries for the freedom fighters during the Quit India movement.  On 8 Aug 1942, Mahatma Gandhi gave a clarion call to end British rule and launched the Quit India Movement at the session of the All-India Congress Committee in Mumbai. Although the movement was suppressed by 1944, it played an important role in uniting the common people across the country against British rule.




UP Govt Plans to Double Farmers income under ‘Panchamrut Yojana’ 


Uttar Pradesh government announced that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘Panchamrut Yojana’ will help to achieve the goal of doubling farmers’ income through the introduction of cost-effective technical measures and the promotion of the co-cropping method.  The Government will also honour farmers who implement the Panchamrut scheme and are able to enhance the productivity of the land as well as their income with ‘Uttam Sugarcane Farmer’ awards. The Uttar Pradesh government encourages farmers to adopt new techniques of agriculture to reduce the cost of agriculture and enhance their income.

Unity SFB named Inderjit Camotra as MD & CEO 


The Unity Small Finance Bank (SFB) Limited (Unity Bank) has appointed, Inderjit Camotra as the managing director and chief executive officer (MD & CEO) of the bank. A senior banker with over 25 years of experience across India, Camotra held various leadership positions at Standard Chartered Bank.  In January 2022, the bank appointed Vinod Rai, the former CAG of India, as its Chairman. Unity Small Finance Bank is a new age, the digital-first bank which was recently elevated to a ‘Scheduled Bank’ and was included in the Second Schedule of the RBI Act.


CSIR appoints Nallathamby Kalaiselvi its first woman director general 


Senior electrochemical scientist, Nallathamby Kalaiselvi has become the first woman director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.  Her appointment is for a period of two years with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Kalaiselvi succeeds Shekhar Mande, who superannuated in April.  Kalaiselvi has risen through the ranks in CSIR and had broken the proverbial glass ceiling by becoming the first woman scientist to head the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) in February 2019.

India considering banning Chinese firms from selling smartphones under ₹12,000: Reports

The Indian government is reportedly considering banning Chinese smartphone makers from selling devices cheaper than ₹12,000. The move is reportedly aimed at giving a boost to homegrown brands. As per a report, smartphones under ₹12,000 contributed to a third of India's sales volume for this financial year's second quarter, with Chinese firms accounting for around 80% of those shipments.

 


Government Emphasises On Whole Of The Government Approach To Boost Exports 


Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, emphasised on 'Whole of Govt' approach to boost exports. Interacting with the Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) and representatives of Industry associations at New Delhi, Goyal reviewed the Export scenario of the country.  He said that the 'Whole of Govt' approach to boosting exports would require exporters, EPCs, govt agencies and Indian missions abroad to work together. He further stated that the ball is in our court and we have to be ready to take on global competition. He said that the government is doing its best through various measures to support Indian exporters to compete globally.



What's the Electricity Amendment Bill & why are power engineers protesting it?

The government on Monday introduced the Electricity Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. The legislation will allow private companies to supply electricity provided they get a license. It will also let private companies use power distribution networks built by public sector firms. Power engineers in many states are protesting it, saying it will result in losses for government discoms.

Chess prodigy V Pranav becomes India's 75th Grandmaster


The Chennai-based chess prodigy V Pranav became India’s 75th Grandmaster by winning a tournament in Romania.  The Chennai-based Pranav won the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania to secure his third and final GM norm and attain the Grandmaster title.  Pranav is the 27th Grandmaster from Tamil Nadu, a list that includes the legendary Viswanathan Anand and teen sensations D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa among others.


Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand becomes FIDE deputy president 


Indian chess legend, Viswanathan Anand was elected deputy president of the International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation (FIDE), the sport's world governing body. While incumbent president Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected for a second term.  Five-time world champion Anand was part of Dvorkovich's team. The elections to the world chess body were held during the FIDE Congress which is being conducted here alongside the 44th Chess Olympiad.


2022 SAFF U20 Championship: India beat Bangladesh 5-2 to clinch the trophy 


India beat Bangladesh 5-2 after extra time to clinch the 2022 SAFF U20 Championship title, at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. India was the host of the 4th edition of the SAFF U-20 Championship.  SAFF U-20 Championship is an international football competition for men’s under-18 national teams organized by the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF). Sibajit Singh Leimapokpam was the captain of the Indian team and Som Kumar was the goalkeeper.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Eldhose Paul becomes the first Indian to win gold in the triple jump 


India’s Eldhose Paul scripted history by winning the first-ever gold medal in Men’s Triple Jump at the Commonwealth Games 2022. With the best effort of 17.03m, he left everyone in awe of his stunning jump.  Paul’s statemate Aboobacker won silver with a 17.02m jump (wind assistance +1.2) in his fifth attempt. Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief won bronze with a jump of 16.92m.


Commonwealth Games 2022: Boxer Nitu Ghangas wins gold in women’s 48 kg category 


Indian boxer Nitu Ghangas has clinched a gold medal after defeating England’s Demie-Jade Resztan in the final of the women’s 48 kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2022. She won on basis of points by 5-0 over her English opponent.  Indian boxer Nitu Ghangas assured the nation of another medal after reaching the final of the Minimum weight (over 45 kg- 48 kg) category by defeating Priyanka Dhillion of Canada in the semifinal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham.


Commonwealth Games 2022: Amit Panghal wins Gold in men’s 48kg-51kg flyweight boxing 


Indian boxer Amit Panghal has won the gold medal in the 48-51kg weight category at Commonwealth Games 2022. He defeated England's Kiaran Macdonald by 5-0 in the final match. It is his second CWG medal after Silver in Gold Coast.  Subedar Amit Panghal is an Indian Army Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a boxer. Born in a farming family based in Rohtak, Haryana, Panghal took inspiration from his elder brother Ajay to become a boxer.


Commonwealth Games 2022: Table Tennis player Bhavina Patel won a gold medal in the women’s singles 


Star Indian para table tennis player, Bhavina Patel won a gold medal in the women's singles class 3-5 at the Commonwealth Games 2022.  The 35-year-old from Gujarat, prevailed 12-10 11-2 11-9 over Nigeria's Ifechukwude Christiana Ikpeoyi to cap off. Bhavina Hasmukhbhai Patel is an Indian parathlete and table tennis player from Mehsana, Gujarat.


Commonwealth Games 2022: Naveen won the gold medal in the men’s 74kg freestyle wrestling 


Indian wrestler Naveen Malik won the gold medal in the men's 74kg freestyle wrestling at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the Coventry Stadium and Arena. Naveen defeated Muhammad Sharif Tahir of Pakistan.  The Indian seemed to have the edge over Tahir in terms of speed and used it to his advantage to open the scoring with a two-point takedown. He went for the kill to score two more takedowns and earned a comprehensive 9-0 win.


Commonwealth Games 2022: Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya bags gold for India 


Ravi Kumar Dahiya has created history at Commonwealth Games 2022 by winning Gold for the country in Men’s Freestyle 57kg Wrestling. Ravi defeated Ebikewenimo Welson of Nigeria 10-0 in the final to win his maiden Commonwealth Games gold.  The match lasted two minutes and 16 seconds. Dahiya was extremely dominant in the first period and did not let his opponent score.

Nikhat Zareen wins the Gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. She defeated Mc Naul of Northern Islands in the finals, by 5-0 in women’s light-fly 48kg-50kg Boxing.
With Nikhat Zareen’s gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022, India gets a total of 17 golds and 48 total medals. Nikhat Zareen again proves her dominance in the world of boxing.

India observes 2nd ‘Javelin Throw Day’ on August 07, 2022 


The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is celebrating the second ‘Javelin Throw Day’ on August 7, 2022. The day was first observed in 2021 in honour of Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics at Tokyo.  This decision to observe Javelin Throw Day is also an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport and get champions ready for a bright future in athletics ahead.

PM Modi to chair NITI Aayog’s Council meet today

PM Narendra Modi will hold the seventh meeting of the NITI Aayog's Governing Council at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in Delhi today. He will talk on a range of topics, including the National Education Policy, agri-communities and urban governance, etc. The meet session is expected to last for around six hours and will be conducted by Union Minister Rajnath Singh.


Bihar to release certain prisoners to commemorate 76th I-Day

The Bihar government has decided to release a certain section of prisoners who have served half their jail terms to commemorate the country's 76th Independence Day. A screening committee of the state home department has been instructed to review records of eligible prisoners for the remission scheme. Notably, Assam will remit the jail terms of 18 prisoners by Independence Day.


Partha Chatterjee won't resign from his MLA post: Lawyer

Suspended TMC leader Partha Chatterjee, who has been arrested in connection with the School Service Commission appointments scam case, doesn't want to resign from his MLA post, said his lawyer. "He (Partha) also mentioned that he is with his party and has full faith in TMC," the lawyer added. Meanwhile, a diabetic diet is being served to Chatterjee in jail.


Who's Dr Kalaiselvi, the 1st woman chief of India’s largest research organisation CSIR?

Dr Nallathamby Kalaiselvi was appointed as the first female Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India's largest research organisation. She's a decorated scientist from Tamil Nadu, known for work on lithium-ion batteries. She was recognised as the International Scientist of the Year in 2007 and has 125 research papers and six patents to her name.

SEBI approved 28 firms' IPOs worth ₹45,000 cr in April-July 2022

SEBI has given its nod to 28 companies to raise ₹45,000 crore in funds through IPOs in April-July 2022. So far in FY23, 11 companies have launched their IPOs to raise ₹33,254 crore. Of this, the largest share (₹20,557 crore) was raised by Life Insurance Corporation's IPO. A total of 52 companies launched IPOs worth ₹1.11 lakh crore in FY22.


Post offices to open on all days for Har Ghar Tiranga campaign till Aug 15

Under 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, all post offices in India will be open on all days before Independence Day to facilitate the sale and delivery of national flags, the Central government has announced. Special arrangements will be made for the delivery of the national flags in all delivery post offices. PM Narendra Modi launched 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign last month.


Social media firms need to enable voluntary user verification: Govt

Social media platforms are required to enable users to voluntarily verify their accounts, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said. The voluntarily verified users must also be provided with visible verification marks, he added. We're aware of the risk and danger posed by growing phenomenon of misinformation, bots, criminality and users' harm in general, he said.

India beat West Indies for 13th time in 15 T20I matches, win series 4-1

India defeated West Indies by 88 runs in the fifth T20I in Florida to win the five-match series 4-1. This is India's 13th victory against West Indies in the last 15 T20I matches between the two teams. Further, this is the second time that India have won at least four matches in a five-match T20I series.


She is India's pride: PM Modi on world champion Nikhat's maiden CWG gold

Following boxing world champion Nikhat Zareen's maiden gold medal at CWG, PM Narendra Modi said, "Nikhat is India's pride. She's a world class athlete who is admired for her skills." Jagdeep Dhankhar elected 14th Vice-President of India

NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar has been elected as the 14th Vice-President of India after defeating Opposition's candidate Margaret Alva. Dhankhar, who has served as Governor of West Bengal in the past, is a lawyer by training and belongs to Rajasthan's Jhunjhunu. The term of office of M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice-President of India, is ending on August 10.

 


Supreme Court to look into changing abortion law to include unmarried women

The Supreme Court said it will interpret the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act and the related rules to potentially allow unmarried women to terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks. Asking the Centre to file a note by the next hearing on August 10, SC asked why unmarried women should be barred from ending pregnancies if married women are allowed.


PM Modi meets Jagdeep Dhankhar, says 'proud to have Kisan Putra VP'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday to congratulate him soon after the latter was elected as India's Vice President. In a statement, PM Modi said, "We are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess." BJP President JP Nadda also met Dhankhar following his victory.

 


Uttarakhand govt decides to develop one Sanskrit-speaking village in each district 


Uttarakhand government has decided to develop one Sanskrit-speaking village in each of the 13 districts in the state. Citizens of these villages will be trained by experts to use the ancient Indian language as a medium of daily communication, Uttarakhand’s Minister for Sanskrit Education.  Sanskrit teachers will be sent to the selected villages to teach locals how to communicate in the language. They will also be taught the Vedas and the Puranas to help them acquire proficiency in Sanskrit. To be called ”Sanskrit Gram”, each of these villages will be a centre of ancient Indian culture.


Haryana government developed the Cheerag programme for EWS Students 


The "Chief Minister Equal Education Relief, Assistance and Grant (Cheerag)" programme was recently introduced by the administration of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.  It was put in lieu of a comparable programme started by the Bhupinder Singh Hooda administration in 2007 under Rule 134 A of the 2003 Haryana School Education Rules.  According to the plan, government students from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) who attend private schools will receive a free education.  Under the Cheerag programme, government school children in grades 2 through 12 may enrol in private schools.  To qualify, parents' verifiable annual income must be less than Rs. 1.8 lakh.  The state of Haryana will pay back: -Rs 700 each student in grades two through five, Rs 900 per student in grades six through eight and Rs 1,100 each student in grades nine through twelve.

Will defend Philippines if it's attacked in the South China Sea: US

US State Secretary Antony Blinken on Saturday said that the US would come to the defence of the Philippines if it faces hostilities in the South China Sea. Referring to an "ironclad" defence pact between the two countries, Blinken stated, "An armed attack on Philippine armed forces, public vessels and aircraft will invoke US mutual defence commitments under that treaty."


Chinese ship to dock in Hambantota for refuelling: Sri Lanka

Chinese research vessel 'Yuan Wang 5' will dock at Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka next week to seek "refuelling and replenishment", Sri Lankan Minister Bandula Gunawardana has said. He reiterated Colombo will not do "anything to harm the good understanding" between India and Sri Lanka. Earlier, India's defence establishment said it would closely follow the visit of the Chinese ship.

 


Roopali Desai becomes 1st Indian-American judge on US' 9th Circuit

The US Senate has confirmed Arizona lawyer Roopali Desai as the first Indian-American judge on the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Desai was confirmed by the Senate by a bipartisan vote of 67-29 on Thursday. The 9th Circuit, which is the largest of the thirteen courts of appeals, has jurisdiction over nine states and two territories.


Sweden and Finland approved to join NATO by US Senate


With 95 senators voting in favour of the measure, the US Senate decisively approved the NATO membership of Sweden and Finland. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri cast the lone dissenting vote, contending that the threat posed by China should receive considerably more attention than European security.  Finland and Sweden's membership in NATO has the strong support of US President Joe Biden, who in July forwarded the issue to the Senate for consideration.

Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy Council (K-DISC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LinkedIn, the world's largest professional network, along with the ICT Academy of Kerala (ICTAK) under the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission (KKEM) as a part of Connect Career to Campus campaign (CCC).  Kerala government aims to boost employability skills with this partnership among the youth of Kerala to get relevant jobs using LinkedIn.  State Government announces that various products and services will be made available for the students on LinkedIn.  The products and services include LinkedIn Insights, curated LinkedIn learning courses, and LinkedIn jobs.

RBI Hikes Repo Rate By 140 Base Points In 3 Months 


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on August 5, 2022, raised the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 5.4 per cent, taking it above the pre-pandemic levels of 2020, as has been speculated in a while.  This is the third time that the RBI has raised the repo rate in a span of few months, by a huge 140 bps in three months, to be precise. One bps equals 0.01 percentage point.


New B'luru-Chennai e-way will reduce travel time to 2 hrs: Gadkari

The new expressway between Bengaluru and Chennai will reduce the travel time between the two cities to two hours, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said. "India will have 26 new green expressways in the next three years and this will reduce the travel time for people choosing roadways," Gadkari said.



India's forex reserves rise by $2.4 billion after 4-week fall

India's foreign exchange reserves rose by nearly $2.4 billion to $573.9 billion during the week ending July 29, according to the Reserve Bank of India's weekly supplementary statistical data. The rise was led by positive inflows by foreign investors in the Indian equity market. It had been witnessing a fall for four consecutive weeks prior to that.


New Payment System For NRIs: The BBPS 


The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) proposed to allow non-resident Indians (NRIs) to make utility, education and other bill payments on behalf of their family members living in India.  The payments will be processed through Bharat Bill Payment System’s (BBPS) cross-border inward bill payments facility.  BBPS is a payments system conceptualized by RBI and run by National Payments Corporation of India(NPCI) to help customers make bill payments both digitally and physically, say, through bank branches and business correspondents.

ISRO's launched tiniest rocket to display the Tricolor in Space 


A tiny satellite launch vehicle will be sent from Sriharikota by the Indian Space Research Organization on 7th August 2022. It is a three-stage vehicle, and each step of propulsion uses solid fuel.  The goal of the project is to place an Earth observation satellite called EOS-02 into low earth orbit along with a satellite called "Azaadi SAT." The satellite will be launched from Sriharikota.  750 female students from government schools in remote areas from Kashmir to Kanyakumari created the "Azaadi Satellite."  Srimathy Kesan, the founder of Space Kidz India, said that the opportunity for the girls to participate in the programme was fantastic.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Bajrang Punia Wins Gold in Men's 65kg Category 

Bajrang Punia has won his 3rd Commonwealth Games medal and his second successive Gold medal in the men's 65kg category.  The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist beat Lachlan McNeil of Canada in the final (9-2). He had won silver in his maiden CWG in 2014 and then bettered the colour four years ago in Gold Cost by winning a gold.



Commonwealth Games 2022: Sakshi Malik Wins Gold in Women's Wrestling 


Star Indian wrestler, Sakshi Malik has won the gold medal in the Women’s Wrestling Freestyle 62Kg at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. She defeated Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Canada in the final.  The 29-year-old defeated England’s Kelsey Barnes 10-0 via technical superiority in the quarter-final and then beat Cameroon’s Berthe Emilienne Etane Ngolle 10-0 via technical superiority in the semi-final.


Commonwealth Games 2022: India's Deepak Punia won a gold medal in Wrestling 


India's wrestler Deepak Punia has won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022 by defeating Pakistan's Muhammad Inam by 3-0 in the men's 86 kg category in the final.  In the semifinal earlier, Deepak saw out Canada's Alexander Moore 3-1 as he gained early points. This is India's third gold medal in wrestling.

Hiroshima Day is observed globally on 6th August


Hiroshima Day is observed on August 6 to commemorate the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945, at the end of World War II.  The horrific incident took place on August 6, 1945, when the United States dropped an atomic bomb named “Little Boy”, on the town of Hiroshima in Japan. 2022 marks the 77th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing.  The day, which is observed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Japan, highlights the effects of nuclear wars, pays respect to those who got killed, discourages nuclear proliferation and promotes world peace.

106-year-old college astronomy lab in Bihar added to UNESCO heritage list

A 106-year-old astronomical observatory in Bihar has been added to UNESCO's list of important endangered heritage observatories. The observatory, established in Langat Singh College in Muzaffarpur in 1916, is reportedly the first of its kind in eastern India. The college authorities said they're hopeful the state government will take steps for conserving it after its inclusion in UNESCO's list.

In order to accredit and rate HMIS (Health Management Information System) and LMIS (Laboratory Information Management System) solutions that have been integrated with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, the National Health Authority (NHA) has onboarded the Quality Council of India (QCI) for six months.  The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH), a constituent board of QCI, is in charge of national accreditation in the medical field, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.



World’s largest floating solar power plant going to be built in Khandwa, MP 


The world’s largest floating solar power plant is going to be built at Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh. With an aim to increase the power generation capacity of the central state of Madhya Pradesh and address the electricity problems in the region.  A floating solar power plant is going to be built in Khandwa which will generate 600 Megawatt power by 2022-23.

Ravinder Takkar named as Chairman of Vodafone Idea 


Ravinder Takkar, the managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of telecom operator Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi), will replace Himanshu Kapania as the telco's new chairman.  He will step down as non-executive chairman of the board with effect from 18 August this month. However, he will continue to be a part of the VIL board as a non-executive director.


Oil India named Ranjith Rath as new Chairman & MD 


Ranjit Rath has taken over as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of state-run Oil India Ltd (OIL). He replaces Sushil Chandra Mishra who retired on 30 June.  The newly appointed OIL CMD has so far been associated with diverse roles spanning from strategy formulation, business development and upstream asset management to the application of geosciences and exploration geology in several important projects including the creation of strategic petroleum reserves (SPR).


Fintech platform BharatPe named Nalin Negi as new CFO 


Nalin Negi has been appointed as the new chief financial officer (CFO) of Fintech startup BharatPe. Earlier he was the CFO of credit card issuer SBI Card.  In his new role, Negi will be working towards making the company's EBITDA positive by March 2023 and leading the financial readiness for the company, which is getting ready for an initial public offering (IPO).  Ebitda stands for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. He will report to Suhail Sameer, CEO, BharatPe and work closely with the Board of BharatPe.

China summons Japanese, EU diplomats over statements on Taiwan

China said it has summoned the Japanese ambassador and European diplomats in the country to protest statements issued by the Group of Seven (G7) nations and the European Union criticising Chinese military exercises around Taiwan. Vice Foreign Minister Deng Li called the statements "erroneous" and objected to "wanton interference in China's internal affairs", the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday said that China's military exercises around Taiwan, including missiles fired into Japan's exclusive economic zone, represent a "significant escalation". China launched the military drills following a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Pelosi's visit was peaceful and did not represent a change in US policy toward Taiwan, Blinken added.

Ready to discuss prisoner swap with US: Russia after Griner's conviction

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia is ready to discuss a prisoner swap with US through a diplomatic channel agreed upon by both Presidents. "If...Americans decide to...again resort to public diplomacy...it's their problem," he added. This comes a day after US basketball player Brittney Griner was convicted of drug smuggling and sentenced to nine years in a Russian prison.

The US added 5.28 lakh jobs in July with the unemployment rate falling to 3.5%. The report comes days after the US government reported that job vacancies across the country had dropped by 6.05 lakh to 1.07 crore by June-end. The department also revised data for June, showing 3.98 lakh jobs created instead of the previously reported 3.72 lakh.

Agreement Between NPCI and IIT Kanpur for Research Collaboration 


A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, paves the way for the exchange of creative ideas and collaboration on the creation of homegrown digital payment solutions.  The collaboration will also aid in strengthening cybersecurity safeguards for the goods and services provided by NPCI and its affiliates. The MoU will spur NPCI and IIT Kanpur to work together on a variety of projects.


Amazon India signed an agreement with Indian Railways to boost delivery 


Amazon India has engaged with the Railway of India to boost its delivery services in the country. Through this partnership, Amazon India will be able to transport packages on more than 110 inter-city routes, ensuring one to two-day delivery for its customer.  Amazon began working with the Indian Railways in 2019. The company has increased its transportation lanes five-fold, it said.  Amazon is one of the enablers for the company to offer 1-day and 2-day delivery promises to customers in the hinterlands of the country. It is now working with Railways in more than 110 inter-city routes.


IOCL and Bangladesh ink MoU to supply emergency petroleum products 


A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the emergency delivery of petroleum products via Bangladeshi territory to India was signed by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Bangladesh Roads and Highways department in Dhaka.  The Indian High Commission stated in a tweet that this is an interim setup to help with the urgent supply of petroleum products due to damage caused by the flood in Assam this year.  Oil tankers will enter from Meghalaya and travel into Bangladeshi territory on their way to Tripura. For use of Bangladeshi land, the IOCL shall be responsible for paying all administrative costs, fees, and local taxes, including the road usage fee.

Crypto exchange WazirX's bank assets worth ₹65 crore frozen by ED

ED has frozen bank assets worth ₹64.67 crore of Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX following a search on the premises of its Director Sameer Mhatre. ED said the action is for "assisting accused instant loan app companies in laundering fraud money via purchase and transfer of virtual crypto assets". The government earlier said ED is probing WazirX transactions worth ₹2,790 crore.

 


4th RBI Monetary Policy review: Repo rate raised by 50 bps 


The Reserve Bank of India has retained its retail inflation forecast for the current fiscal year at 6.7 per cent. It has increased the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 50 basis points to 5.40 per cent with immediate effect.  RBI hiked the policy repo rate for the third time in a row. The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee is headed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das.


Consequently, the various rates are as under:

Standing Deposit Facility (SDF): 5.15%

Marginal Standing Facility Rate: 5.65%

India's Trade Deficit At Record High: 31 billion Dollar 


India’s trade deficit widened to a record $31.02 billion in July, as imports of goods surged despite curbs and merchandise exports contracted for the first time in 20 months.  July merchandise exports declined by 0.76% from a year ago to $37.24 billion, while imports grew 44% to $66.26 billion during the month because of high commodity prices and a weak rupee, data released by the ministry of commerce and industry showed.  Trade deficit is said to take place when the imports done by a country exceed that of the exports done by a country in a fiscal year.

India-US Armies to hold mega military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” in Uttarakhand’s Auli 


The Indian Army and the US Army will conduct the 18th edition of the fortnight-long mega military exercise “Yudh Abhyas” from October 14 to 31, 2022, at Auli in Uttarakhand.  The exercise is aimed at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the two armies. The previous edition of the exercise took place in Alaska, the US, in October 2021.  The exercise is aimed at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the armies of India and the US.  The "Yudh Abhyas" exercise is taking place in the backdrop of India's lingering border row with China in eastern Ladakh.

IDF World Dairy Summit 2022 to be held in New Delhi


International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS 2022), is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 12. India will look to improve its per animal milk productivity by drawing lessons from advanced nations.  Currently, the world’s largest milk producer with about 210 million tonnes of production per year, India lags behind many advanced countries in dairy productivity.  This, according to dairy sector leaders, will be a key takeaway for the country from the Summit that has a theme of “livelihood and nutrition”.


India to host special meeting of UN SC Counterterrorism Committee 


In October, India will host diplomats from the UN Security Council's 15 member countries for a special counterterrorism meeting. India's two-year term as an elected non-permanent member of the UN Security Council is halfway over. In December of this year, India's term on the Council will come to a close, and for that month, it will also serve as President of the influential UN body.  India will welcome diplomats from the 15-nation Security Council, including the US, China, and Russia, for the special meeting of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee in October.

Deepak Punia defeats Pakistan's Inam to win India's 3rd gold medal of the day at CWG 2022

Indian wrestler Deepak Punia defeated Pakistan's Muhammad Inam to bag a gold medal in the men's freestyle 86 kg category at CWG 2022. Deepak won the gold medal in his first-ever CWG. India have bagged three gold medals in wrestling at CWG 2022 today. Overall, India have bagged nine gold medals at CWG 2022.

 

 

Commonwealth Games 2022: Sudhir won the gold medal in men's heavyweight para powerlifting


Sudhir claimed the gold medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Sudhir, an Asian Para Games bronze medallist, lifted 208kg in his first attempt before increasing it to 212kg in his second effort to gather 134.5 points and break the Games record.  Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu won the silver with 133.6 points, while Micky Yule bagged the bronze with 130.9 points.  The 27-year-old Sudhir, who has an impairment due to the effects of polio, thus opened India’s para sports medal account in the ongoing CWG.

Former Australian boxing world champion Johnny Famechon passes away 


Former Australian featherweight boxing world champion Johnny Famechon has passed away. He was 77. He was associated with professional boxing for more than 20 years and had a record of 56 wins, which includes 20 by knockout, six draws and five losses.  The Australian boxer’s most memorable world title victory was his WBC points decision win against Cuban Jose Legra at London’s Albert Hall in 1969. Famechon boxed professionally for more than 20 years and had a record of 56 wins, 20 by knockout, six draws and five losses.
